First In
First In is a series of five 90-minute remote (via Zoom) once-per-week workshops which take place starting in early July.
Summer 2023 Schedule
The Tuesday sessions will take place from 11:00-12:30 p.m. Eastern time. The Thursday sessions (which will cover the same material as Tuesdays) will take place from 8:00-9:00pm Eastern time. Bonus sessions (for parents and international students) are on different days and times, as noted. All regular First In sessions are structured with half as an information session, half in breakout rooms with FLI student leaders (where you can ask the real questions without any adults around!). Special information for International Student Chesick Scholars (July 6, 9 a.m. ET)
Meet the international student office staff, Chesick Scholars staff, and hear from current international student Chesick scholars about what they wish they knew before arriving. Get advice on what and how to pack, and how to balance ISO with Horizons activities.
Week 1 (July 11 at 11 a.m. or July 13 at 8 p.m.): Welcome to the Chesick Family!
Meet the Chesick Scholars staff and FLI Student Leaders, and fellow incoming students. Learn more about Haverford and the Chesick programs, including the Summer Reading and Learning Groups and Horizons Institute.
Week 2 (July 18 at 11 a.m. or July 20 at 8 p.m.): College 101: What You Need to Know to Get Started
Learn about academic advisors and deans, how to choose and register for courses, essential things to bring for your dorm room, and other practical matters useful in getting set for the fall semester. Meet Dean Barbara Hall, who will explain the faculty mentor program and the role of the advising dean. Meet a faculty mentor to share about their experience working with Chesick Scholars.
Week 3 (July 25 at 11 a.m. or July 27 at 8 p.m.): Preparing for Your First Year Financially
Learn the real costs of attending Haverford, the nuts and bolts of financial aid, work-study, textbook purchases and other expenses. Students will have the opportunity to see an actual student financial aid portal and learn about how to pay bills, adjust for scholarships, etc. A guest from the CCPA career center will talk about how to find work-study jobs on campus. Students will also learn about the LIFTFAR financial assistance program offered through Chesick Scholars Program, The Nest food pantry, and the (Re)Use store.
Week 4 (August 1 at 11 a.m. – only one session this week): What to Expect at Haverford — Academics
This session focuses on expectations in and out of the classroom, College requirements and how to get the most out of courses, professors and research opportunities. This information will be followed by a virtual faculty meet and greet where students will get to talk to Haverford faculty members in small groups.
Week 5 (August 8 at 11 a.m. or August 10 at 8 p.m.): What to Expect at Haverford – Campus Life
Chesick Student Leaders will answer your questions about clubs, affinity groups, campus housing, and the huge array of social activities that supplement coursework in your Haverford experience. Guest speakers from Student Engagement and Residential Life will discuss how to join or start clubs, how dorms work, and provide an introduction to Customs (orientation) week.
