Swamp White Oak

#8 - Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor)

The Latin name tells us that this is an oak with leaves of two colors: dark green on the upper surface and silver underneath. The common name reminds us of its native habitat. Not confined to a swampy site, Haverford’s lofty specimen, documented on the original 1834 campus landscape plan, provides cooling shade and a splendid backdrop for commencement exercises on the quadrangle every May.
