Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2447 Charlottesville, 2017. White supremacists chanted “Jews will not replace us!”—but what did they mean? Are European Jews white? Is Zionism racism? Is Judaism just a religion? Regarded as the "other" of European history and politics, the perpetrators of discrimination in Israel/Palestine, and advocates of racial justice in America, Jews play a significant role in contemporary racial discourses. This course is a survey of Jewish history and politics through the lens of race. We will examine primary documents, works of history, fiction, film, comedy, ethnography, and theory in order to make sense of present problems in Israel, Europe, and America.
