Additional Course Info | Class Number: 1151 Georges Duhamel, one of the authors on the program, called the United States of America Outre-Occident. Obviously, the term is semantically loaded and connotes above all a certain exoticism, a difference. In this course, we will study and interrogate representations of America by French-speaking authors: what are the dominant features of these depictions? What are the ideas that underpin them? The tradition of portraying America is an old and very rich one, at least since the publication of On Democracy in America, de Tocqueville's famous study. Consequently, we will limit ourselves mostly to authors of the 20th and 21st centuries: Baudrillard, Beauvoir, Dalembert, Duhamel, Godbout, Hergé, Labro and Sartre.; Crosslisted: FREN and COML Humanities, A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts) (Hav: HU, A) |
