Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2391 In this course we will explore several different ancient formulations of “The Good Life” (e.g., Popular, Stoic, Epicurean, Christian) as they emerge from classical Latin texts in prose and verse, with the goal of becoming better readers of Latin. Our work will include a collaborative project in which we produce something of common value (e.g., a student-focused commentary on one of the texts, or a "Live Like an Epicurean" handbook for experiential learning). Sample readings: Publilius Syrus or Valerius Maximus; Cicero's Somnium Scipionis or Tusculans 5; Horace's Epistles; Seneca's Letters; the Life of Elagabalus; the Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas or the Life of Malchus the Enslaved Monk or Prudentius' Psychomachia, inscriptions and other documentary evidence.; Prerequisite(s): Two semesters of 100-level Latin, or instructor consent Humanities, A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts) (Hav: HU, A) |
