Additional Course Info | Class Number: 1374 In the aftermath of the George Floyd killing, Raoul Peck’s I am not Your Negro was widely watched on campuses across the country. This biopic of James Baldwin and reflection on anti-Black racism in the US is only one of many films the Haitian-born filmmaker has released in the past twenty years taking on both historical and contemporary societal issues, from neo-colonialism (Lumumba) and genocide (Sometimes in April) in Africa, to the failure of international aid to developing countries (Fatal Assistance), capitalism (Profit and Nothing But!) and, most recently, historical racism and colonialism (Exterminate all the Brutes ). In this seminar we will discuss the wide-ranging questions that Peck addresses in his oeuvre, paying special attention to his radical aesthetics.; Crosslisted: FREN and COML Humanities, A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts) (Hav: HU, A) |
