Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2508 This is a topics course. Topics vary.; Current topic description: This course focuses on the ways in which cities, as political, economic, social, and cultural centers as well as important hubs of travel and trade, have experienced epidemics and pandemics since the nineteenth century. It will examine the challenges posed by the “colonial diseases” (yellow fever, cholera, bubonic plague, and influenza) and the emerging diseases that have been occurring at an increasing scale and frequency since the accession of African countries to independence. They include (but are not limited to) HIV/AIDS, Ebola, Marburg, and SARS-Cov-2, which caused Covid-19). The course will also examine their socioeconomic consequences and the anxiety they have provoked. The course will also introduce students to the sources, methods, issues, and interpretations in African history.
