Topics may vary.; Current topic description: This course considers important German-language works that focus on the perspective of children and adolescents. Selected works include folklore, children’s books, short stories, and feature films from the nineteenth century to the present that have been produced by writers from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Students not only read the classics of children's literature by the Brothers Grimm, Erich Kästner, Michael Ende, Janosch, Cornelia Funke (the “J. K. Rowling” of Germany), Christine Nöstlinger (Austrian), and Klaus Schädelin (Swiss), but also discuss critically acclaimed films such as Isabell auf der Treppe (1984), Das Pferd auf dem Balkon (2012), and Fritzi – Eine Wendewundergeschichte (2019), materials that offer a youthful Blick into the political, social, and cultural life and history in the German-speaking countries. This course emphasizes the development of conversational, writing, listening, and interpretive skills. A special focus will be placed on the expansion of vocabulary and development of excellent writing skills. Discussions and written assignments will be in German. Specific points of German grammar will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.
