Additional Course Info | Class Number: 1529 A complete reading and close study of Virgil, whose "afterlife," it has been said with little exaggeration, "is Western literature." We read all of the certain poems--Eclogues (c. 39 BCE), Georgics (c. 29 BCE), and Aeneid (c. 19 BCE)--completely in English, substantial portions of each in the Latin, and scholarship and criticism. Aiming at increased fluency in reading Latin poetry, we also seek to deepen our capacity to respond to this astonishing ancient poet rigorously and meaningfully. Attention is paid to some of Virgil's models in Latin and Greek and to some imitators especially in the European epic tradition. Haverford: Humanities (HU) ( ) |
