Prerequisites: two 200-level courses.; Current topic description: This course puts into perspective the digital revolution that has swept the 21st century. We will explore it as the latest in a series of revolutions that import numbers, algorithms, and machines into fields where letters and other media are previously the norm. The mathematical, technological, and literary works of Blaise Pascal will provide a focus for our discussions of the history of digitization, from Gutenberg to Google.
