Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2741 This is a topics course. Course content varies.; Current topic description: So much of classical Latin poetry was originally written to be sung, or at least to simulate the effect of singing; Romans were preternaturally attuned to rhythm and pitch even in prose. But the musical tradition that we have inherited really starts with Gregorian chant, and Western tonality and counterpoint expands from there. The course will treat such themes as the motif of song in classical Latin epic and lyric; Ambrose and early hymnic practice; excerpts from grammatical texts that discuss the sound of language (Priscian, Bede, Alcuin) and from treatises on music; the musical writing of Hildegard of Bingen; and case studies of the settings of particular Latin texts—for example, the Stabat Mater, which has garnered such various responses from composers. We shall also be reading excerpts from Wittgenstein’s posthumous collection Culture and Value, to help us think about music as a language at the limits of language. Haverford: A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts) (A), Humanities (HU) Enrollment Cap: 20; If the course exceeds the enrollment cap the following criteria will be used for the lottery: Permission of Instructor; |
