Taught in German.; Current topic description: Funny Germans: Humor and satire often serve as strategies to criticize political power and social malaise. The course acquaints students with seminal German authors/filmmakers and major historical and literary periods, as well as with the German way of creating humor and satire. The works chosen for this class range from the Enlightenment to the present, including Lessing, Kleist, Morgenstern, Ringelnatz, Lubitsch, Gernhardt, Loriot, Levy, Petzold, Wilder, Dörrie and Akyün. It will change the stereotype about Germans and illustrate that in fact there exists within German culture a rich tradition of subversive humor and political satire.
