Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2296 A study of the origins, development and transformation of the picaresque genre from its origins in 16th- and 17th-century Spain through the 21st century. Using texts, literature, painting, and film from Spain and Latin America, we will explore topics such as the construction of the fictive self, the poetics and politics of criminality, transgression in gender and class. Among the topics to be discussed: criminalization of poverty, prostitution, and the feminine picaresque. Prerequiste: At least one SPAN 200-level course. Course fulfills pre-1700 requirement and HC's pre-1898 requirement.; Course is limited to 12 students. Haverford: Humanities (HU) ( ) Enrollment Cap: 12; If the course exceeds the enrollment cap the following criteria will be used for the lottery: Major/Minor/Concentration; Permission of Instructor; This will be a synchronous, in-person course. That is, students who cannot be in class in person cannot take the course remotely. If circumstances change due to new safety requirements, we will all move to synchronous on-line teaching |
