Prerequisite: GEOL B101; We will explore how the Earth-life system has evolved through time by studying the interactions between life, climate, and tectonic processes. During the lab component of the course, we will study important fossil groups to better understand their paleoecology and roles in the Earth-life system. This course is designed to help students become well-versed in the methods, theories and applications of the broad fields of Earth history and paleobiology. In particular, we will discuss the biology and ecology of important fossil groups as well as the intricacies of understanding the fossil record by focusing on important events in Earth history. There are no required textbooks for this course. Prerequisites can be waived with professor approval, which is commonly granted. This course is taught every fall. NOTE: starting this year, this course will no longer be a "writing intensive" course. The "writing in the major" requirement will be satisfied via other Geology courses.
