Additional Course InfoClass Number: 2113 An intensive introductory course in modern spoken and written Chinese. The development of oral-aural skills is integrated through grammar explanations and drill sessions designed to reinforce new material through active practice. Six hours a week of lecture and oral practice plus one-on-one sessions with the instructor. This is a year-long course; both semesters are required for credit. Requires attendance at class and drills.; 1. Course Description: First-year Chinese is an intensive introductory course in modern spoken and written Chinese. The development of oral-aural skills is integrated through grammar explanations and drill sessions designed to reinforce new material through active practice. Weekly meetings include six hours of lecture and oral practice plus one-on-one sessions with the instructor. This is a year-long course; both semesters are required for credit. Attendance at master classes and drills are required. By the end of the school year, students are expected to be able to initiate and respond to basic conversations in Chinese understand and produce simple connected text on a variety of everyday topics. 2. Teaching Materials: • Integrated Chinese, Textbook, Level 1, Part 1 (IC), Simplified Characters, 3rd Edition, by Yuehua Liu, Tao-chung Yao et al. • Integrated Chinese, Workbook, Level 1, Part 1 (ICW), Simplified Characters, 3rd Edition • Integrated Chinese, Character Workbook, Level 1, Part 1 (ICCW), Simplified and Traditional Characters, 3rd Edition Approach: Course does not meet an Approach; Haverford: A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts) (A), Humanities (HU) Enrollment Cap: 18; If the course exceeds the enrollment cap the following criteria will be used for the lottery: Freshman; Sophomore; Permission of Instructor; The Drill will be held at Haverford in Sharpless 227; 1. For Master Classes (i.e. Lectures): Week 1 & Week 2-- Remote (on Zoom, synchronous) on both Mondays & Thursdays. Week 3 to November 20--Remote on Mondays, In-person with Zoom on Thursdays (at BMC). November 30 to end of semester--Remote (on Zoom, synchronous) on both Mondays & Thursdays. 2. For Drill Sessions: Remote only (on Zoom, synchronous), on both Tuesdays & Fridays. 3. Weekly Individual Conferences Remote only. Each student will meet with the instructor on Zoom for 10 minutes every week.
