Additional Course Info | Class Number: 1014 This course focuses on the principles of genetics, including classical genetics, population genetics and molecular genetics. Topics to be covered include the genetic and molecular nature of mutations and phenotypes, genetic mapping and gene identification, chromosome abnormalities, developmental genetics, genome editing and epigenetics. Examples of genetic analyses are drawn from a variety of organisms including Drosophila, C. elegans, mice and humans. Lecture three hours a week. Prerequisite: BIOL B110 and CHEM B104.; If you are interested in obtaining a tentative copy of the syllabus, please feel free to contact me via email. The syllabus will not be dramatically different from previous years, though there may be some minor changes to accommodate the changes in the schedule for the semester. Approach: Quantitative Readiness Required (QR), Scientific Investigation (SI); Haverford: C: Physical and Natural Processes (C), Natural Science (NA) Enrollment Limit: 36; Postbacc Spaces: 6; If the course exceeds the enrollment cap the following criteria will be used for the lottery: Major/Minor/Concentration; Junior; Senior; Sophomore; Questionnaire/Lottery; Due to the anticipated size of Genetics, it is likely that students will attend one in-person lecture each week (either Monday or Thursday), and will synchronously join the other lecture from their dorm room or another location where they can observe social distancing; the day of in-person attendance will be assigned to abide by social distancing guidelines. A small number of lectures will be delivered entirely remotely, and students are expected to watch those lectures prior to the next scheduled class meeting. While synchronous attendance of lectures is ideal, I recognize that students may be in different time zones and/or may be dealing with personal or family circumstances that prevent them from attending synchronous lectures, particularly if they are learning remotely in the fall or become sick. Therefore, all lectures will be recorded and available on Moodle. To facilitate engagement with the course material, remote office hours will be scheduled at several times during the week (times to be announced at the beginning of the semester), and a discussion board (or something similar) will be available on Moodle. My goal is to provide the best learning experience for my students as possible, given the circumstances. I hope to see you in the fall! |
