Teaching Activities
I teach the full range of courses in music theory and composition, including the introductory theory-musicianship course (Music 110), the three-semester sequence in tonal harmony (Music 203, 204, and 303), and counterpoint (Music 304). I also teach Symphonic Technique and Tradition (Music 265) and the Seminar in 20th/21st Century Theory and Practice (Music 325). Every other year, I offer an introductory course in composition (Music 266) in partnership with our acclaimed ensemble-in-residence, Network for New Music. Students in Music 266 have the opportunity to hear and receive feedback about their works-in-progress throughout the course of the semester. In addition, student compositions are recorded by the Network ensemble at the close of the term. Short videos documenting Network for New Music’s participation in the composition class and in the chamber music program (an innovative pairing of student and professional musicians to rehearse and perform contemporary music) are accessible at the links below.
