Kelly D. Brownell, Ph.D. is an American scientist, professor and internationally renowned expert on obesity. Brownell is director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale, where he is also professor of psychology and professor of epidemiology and public health. His research deals primarily with obesity and the intersection of behavior, environment and health with public policy. He was named in 2006 as one of "The World's 100 Most Influential People" by Time magazine. He was elected the same year to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Brownell will become the next dean of Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy as of July 1, 2013.

Dr. Brownell is visting Haverford to speak in a psychology course, "Supersized Nation: Understanding and Managing America's Obesity Epidemic," offered this spring by Visiting Professor Thomas Wadden. Drs. Brownell and Wadden have collaborated for more than 30 years, beginning at the University of Pennsylvania (1981-1991), where Dr. Wadden now directs the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders.
