Have you ever wondered about a time when West Philly was merely a suburb of the city with immaculate homes comparable to those found on the Main Line today? Or when our bridge leading to the Meeting House was actually built over railroad tracks—hence Railroad Ave? Many of us use SEPTA regularly, without ever considering the role transportation companies of the past played in the development of Philadelphia and its surrounding regions. Using maps and other documents housed in Special Collections, we will discuss suburban Philadelphia development—and Haverford’s place in that development–within the larger context of American expansion and urbanization.
