Art In The House

Haverford’s former Safety and Security building has undergone an exciting makeover: it is now James House, a student-governed home for the arts. Replete with studio space, a kiln and pottery wheel, tons of random art supplies, comfy thrift-store furniture, and meeting spaces for campus arts organizations, James House is a central spot for the arts on campus.

World Music

The Chamber Singers of Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges have been to Poland, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Ghana, and most recently, Turkey for their sixth international cultural exchange tour, which included shared concerts with university choirs at Middle East Technical, Anadolu, and Bogazici universities, and discussions on cultural and political issues with students at those schools. They learned six pieces from the Turkish choral repertoire they performed with their peers in Turkey and prepared for the trip with lecture discussions led by several guest speakers on various aspects of Turkish history and culture, including a special visit from ethnomusicologist John Morgan O'Connell from the University of Cardiff, Wales, a leading authority on Turkish vocal music and the changes it has undergone since the Kemalist revolution of the 1920's.

The Sound of Music

During the 2009-20010 Season, the Music Department brought a variety of exciting performances to campus including: Lyric Fest, pianist Inna Faliks, Italian composer Ada Gentile, Daedalus String Quartet, and Tamagawa University Taiko Dance Group.

Exhibits

From painting and sculpture to photography and wood engraving, Haverford has a lively exhibition schedule in spaces including the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery, the John B. Hurford '60 Center for the Arts and Humanities, and Magill Library.

A Cappella Is A Ca-Popular

Want to sing in an a cappella group at Haverford? You have a lot of choices. From the all-male Humtones and S-Chords to the all-female Outskirts and Oxford Blues, to the co-ed Looney Tunes, Main-Liners, Chaverim, Counterpoint, and Two Fish, Haverford has the highest number of a cappella groups per capita of any U.S. college.
