Returning Home: Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is a good way to extend your abroad experience, share your new knowledge and give something back!

  1. Join the Student Study Abroad Advisory Board (SSAAB):
This board is comprised of students who have returned from a study abroad experience. Board members meet weekly and assist and advise Donna Mancini. The Board reviews petitions to add new programs to the approved list, mediate and resolve student complaints. Changes to Haverford's Approved List begin with a petition to SSAAB. Board members also are called on to assist at the Pre-Departure Orientation Session for the next group of students going abroad.
  2. Be a Resource:
Talk with students who are going to the same country/program. You can give a student's perspective on everything from courses to what's the food is like. It's nice to have somebody to ask who's been there and done that.
  3. Be a "Student Contact":
Have your name included on the list of contacts on the IAP website.
  4. Participate at Information Sessions:
Two mandatory information sessions are offered every semester to give an overview of Haverford's Study Abroad program. You could organize country specific get-togethers and table talks.
  5. Represent Your Program (if asked) at the Study Abroad Fair in October:
Often programs cannot send someone to the Fair on Family Weekend. They frequently call on past participants to set up a table and represent their program. If you are enthusiastic about your program and the experience you had, you could answer questions and hand out literature to passers-by. In the past, students have used their laptops to show pictures and play music from the country they are representing.
  6. Participate at Pre-departure Orientation:
Besides the Study Abroad Advisory Board, who assist with the main meeting each semester, students who have been abroad are needed to meet in small groups with those going to the same country.
  7. Share Your Photographs:
Share the great photos you took while abroad for the IAP website and photo gallery. Additionally, enter photos in the Photo Contest and help with the set up and take down
  8. Apply for the Forum on Education Abroad Research Award:
Dean Donna Mancini is the nominating member of the Forum. For consideration and more information, call for an appointment: 610-896-1230. Visit the Forum on Education Abroad site >
  9. Enter the Study Abroad Essay Contest in the Fall.
