Planning: Field Work, Independent/Directed Study or Research Courses

Students hoping to participate in directed research, independent research, directed study or independent study should investigate the opportunities present at the programs below.

Some programs are designed to help students start writing their thesis, some are merely exploratory, and some are intended to supplement course loads when necessary or desired courses aren’t available.

Definitions:

  • Directed Research: students collaborate with faculty to research and investigate a problem or hypothesis
  • Directed Study: students collaborate with faculty to examine a subject area of their choice
  • Field Work: students participate in hands on research out in the field
  • Independent Research: students design and carry out their own research and report to faculty at the end of study period (quarter, semester, year)
  • Independent Study: students design and carryout their own course and course work, reporting to faculty at the end of their period of study (quarter, semester, year)
