Applying: Withdrawals & Cancellations

Withdrawal from Study Abroad

A lonley airport.

Students who choose to withdraw from a program after submitting a confirmation of acceptance form must notify the Office of International Academic Programs in writing and outline in detail the reasons for their change in plans.

Students who choose to withdraw from a program once it has begun and students who must withdraw for medical or personal reasons are required to consult with the on site director, the Haverford Director of International Academic Programs and their Haverford dean, prior to their departure from the program. Students must submit a detailed written statement to the Office of International Academic Programs (OIAP) explaining the reasons for the withdrawal and their plans for return to Haverford. Unless Haverford cancels the program, students will not be permitted to enroll at Haverford during the semester they are scheduled to be abroad. The Director of International Academic Programs in consultation with the student's dean or the Dean of the College, will convert the student's status from International Study to either Dean's Leave or Conditional Leave depending on the reasons for the withdrawal.

The decision to withdraw or return home early rests with the individual. Haverford College can not guarantee academic credit will be awarded if a student chooses to withdraw from a program before the completion of classes and examinations. In the case of medical withdrawal, the Director of OIAP will help negotiate credits and grades. Regrettably, even in such cases, there are no guarantees that the courses can be completed (and credits awarded) once the student leaves the program. Owing to the examination schedules of partner universities, it may not be possible for students to take them until a later time in the year. Occasionally, the student may have to return to the university at their own expense to take the exams. Professors abroad may not always be available to set special exams for students who withdraw from the program. Link to professors section(Extensions and Incompletes) in Procedure for Receiving Credit Haverford will abide by the rules and regulations of the host university. Students should check with the specific program for information regarding tuition refunds.

Cancellation of Programs

All decisions concerning the cancellation of the approved programs rests with Haverford College in consultation with the responsible authorities abroad. If a program were to be canceled or the individual chose to withdraw, Haverford would adhere to the established reimbursement policy of the program. In most cases, only pro-rated room and board fees would be refunded; airfare is not refunded. It is the responsibility of each student to know the refund policy of his or her program. This information is available from the program catalogs and websites.
