Hi, I'm Dana, and I'm in my junior year at Haverford.
A little bit about me...
At Haverford, I am the Upper Class Advisor (UCA) for Gummere 3/2, am Co-Chair of the Rufus M. Jones Institute for Leadership, and occassionally write for the Bi-Co News. I also used to row crew and miss it lots!
In its third year, The RMJ Institute for Leadership is becoming more well-known on campus, and continues to serve a wider audience. Throughout the year, the Leadership Development Committee organizes events, speakers, discussions, workshops, and retreats which focus on a wide array of leadership topics. We try to share with the community many different perspectives on leadership. Check out the website for more information about how to earn a certificate in the program. But enough of that plug...
I'm an economics major, and some topics that really interest me are public finance and urban policy reform, game theory and behavioral economics, and applied econometrics. If interested, I reccomend reading "Freakonomics" by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, "More Sex is Safer Sex: The Unconventional Wisdom of Economics" by Steven Landsburg, and "Game Theory Evolving" by Herbert Gintis. Following this thread, I am interested in incentive structures and how they relate to psychology, business and marketing, and political science. "Stumbling on Happiness" by Daniel Gilbert is a good read. Since doing a group econometrics project on player salaries in the NBA, I have become interested in the field of sports economics and want to explore it further.
Another interest of mine is journalism. I have written for many pubulications, including the Bi-Co News. For the past two summers I have worked as a reporter and photographer for several South Jersey weekly newspapers which focus on Ocean City and other resort towns. I have enjoyed covering everything from lifeguard competitions and sports events, to parades and pageants, to business/restaraunt reviews. I am getting better at taking photographs - a new interest of mine.
I live in Ocean City, New Jersey dubbed "America's Greatest Family Resort." At home, I enjoy ocean and bay kayaking, swimming, and doing lots of volunteer work.
But that's plenty about me!
