Several sources of research funding are available to Haverford students. A number of offices and departments steward these different funds; questions about funding should be directed to the appropriate contact listed below.

Andrew Silk Summer Journalism Internship
Supports a summer internship in print or broadcast journalism. Current HC and BMC first-year, sophomores and juniors are eligible and will receive a stipend of $2500.

Deborah Lafer-Scher International Internship
Provides a summer stipend between $2,500-$3000 to assist with living and travel expenses associated with pursuing a relevant international experience outside the United States and preferably outside the North America Hemisphere. Current HC first year, sophomores and juniors are eligible.

Gertrude Albert Heller Memorial Grant
Encourages students to work with individuals with developmentally disabilities/neurological disorders in direct care (areas include, but are not limited to individuals with Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's, to name a few). Lambda Alumni Internship Program
Funds one student engaged in a summer work experience with charitable organizations, societies, associations, or groups that focus on causes, concerns, and issues that affect the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities. Current HC sophomores, juniors or senior are eligible for a stipend of $3000.

Primary Care Pre-Medical Fellowship provided by Dr. Steven Jaharis
This fellowship provides summer stipend moneys for pre-medical students to work specifically in clinical settings with underserved populations. Students find location and mentor. Project may be funded for 1 to 8 weeks in duration, depending on number of students provided fellowship. Examples of past projects include assisting in understaffed medical clinics in South Philadelphia and other urban and rural locations, a Planned Parenthood Clinic, a Philadelphia needle exchange project, a Mom mobile serving inner-city teenage mothers, and an inner city ER. Smart Family Internship Grant
To support a student to engage in a summer internship in the communications field. To assist with expenses associated with pursuing a relevant experience in print or broadcast journalism. The student needs to obtain a summer position within the field of communications (television, radio, print publication, advertising, public relations). Current HC first-year, sophomore and juniors are eligible for a stipend of $3000.

Whitehead Internship Program
Funded by a Haverford alumnus, honoring John C. Whitehead '43, to encourage Haverford students, who have completed their junior or sophomore year, to engage in a summer work experience related to entrepreneurial endeavors, small business enterprise, venture capital or investment finance activities.

Center for Peace and Global Citizenship Internships
Self-Designed Internships
CPGC invites students to develop summer internships which deepen and expand their classroom learning and allow them to engage with organizations in the non-profit, educational, public or private sectors doing work related to the mission of the Center. Internships must be related to students’ coursework, and can be research and/or service-oriented. Internships are full-time work commitments and range in duration from four to ten weeks (8-10 week internships are preferred). Seniors can develop their own projects and apply to the "senior bridge" fund; previously funded students can apply using the "continuing connections" application.

Student Research Fund
Want to enhance your understanding of complex peace and social justice issues within and across cultures? Enrich your thesis work with on-site field research? The CPGC will fund domestic or international student research that occurs over any of the three breaks (Fall, Winter, Spring), or that occurs throughout the semester or year. Strong preference is given to those applying for funds related to senior thesis research. However, if you have a need to pursue research related to another stream of your studies, you are welcome to present your ideas. Be sure that you have consulted with a faculty member who can speak to your project and its merit.

Supports student development in the profession of history. To be eligible, you must have completed junior year as history major. Funding variable up to $3000.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Interdisciplinary Science Scholars Program
This interdisciplinary program of research and coursework is supported by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. It includes a broad range of fields, including biochemistry, biophysics, and bioinformatics, materials science, nanotechnology and applied mathematics. Interdisciplinary Scholars commit themselves to a course of study which has a strong foundation in the experimental sciences, mathematics, or psychology, and explores upper level science and math outside of the major. HHMI Interdisciplinary Scholars participate in 10 weeks of research at Haverford during the summer, and present their work to students and faculty during a poster session held in the fall.

John B. Hurford '60 Center for the Arts and Humanities
Student Research Stipends
To foster vigorous and independent humanistic scholarship by Haverford students, the Center for the Arts and Humanities offers research stipends of up to $300. Applications may be made for any of the following purposes:
- Travel to professional conferences & meetings relevant to a research project; to cultural events integral to a research or creative project; travel to libraries, collections, or museums to support a research or creative project;
- Obtaining materials needed for a research project unavailable in Tri-Co collections.
Grants are made on a rolling, ad hoc basis up to the capacity of the Center's funding line for this program. They are usually given for senior projects, although others may be considered. Applications must be supported by a Haverford faculty member.

Summer Humanities Internships
The Center's Humanities internships offer rising Haverford Seniors apprenticeships at Philadelphia-based arts organizations, historical or scholarly societies, publishers, and community groups with interests in humanities-related activity. This program provides opportunities for students to engage their interests in the world beyond Haverford, bringing that experience to various dimensions of their final year at the College. The Center pays for ten uninterrupted weeks of full-time work (June-August).

Summer Student Research Assistantships
Designed to foster close interaction between students and faculty pursuing humanistic inquiry, the Student Research Assistantship Program provides mutual benefits, helping scholars advance their work while giving students meaningful experience in developing humanistic research and curricula. SRAs undertake a variety of tasks, including archival research, exploration of bibliographical databases or primary sources, generating annotated bibliographies, editing, proof-reading, source-checking, web design, and curatorial apprenticeship. These assistantships take place for up to ten weeks in the summer, with the Center providing a weekly stipend. Arrangements for shorter periods may be considered. The Center prioritizes returning students, but recent graduates are eligible to work during their post-graduation summer.

Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center
Brian Kovaric Fund
This annual summer support fund has been established by the Kovaric family in memory of Brian (Haverford Chemistry '05.) The fund will support one first year / rising sophomore as a summer research student in the natural sciences for a 10 week appointment. The student is required to present a poster at the end of the summer and to write a letter of thanks to the family (which can be sent through the Provost or Institutional Advancement). To reflect Brian's contributions to our community, we consider students who are original thinkers and who love science.
How to Apply: nominees then will be asked to submit their transcript and a short paragraph answering the following question: "Write a paragraph or two describing why you would like to be part of a research lab at Haverford this coming summer, and how this experience could benefit you in your future studies and in life after Haverford." Student Travel Stipend
Funding can support a student as part of a faculty- supported project or student-initiated academic experience. Requests must be made at least two weeks in advance of travel, require sponsorship of a faculty member, and should not exceed $1,500.00. The KINSC works jointly with the Provost's office to review applications and, in appropriate cases, may recommend the provision of a grant from the Louis Green Fund.

Summer Stipend
In order to support external research and academically-oriented service projects, the KINSC funds summer stipends, which were established to strengthen and maintain relationships with institutions outside Haverford nationally and internationally. This stipend program complements existing opportunities for summer research for students in faculty science labs at Haverford.

Ariadne Solter Fund
The fund supports a BMC or HC undergraduate in a summer internship/experience involved with a project in a developing country or in underdeveloped areas of the US . Applicants must have identified/applied for a prospective internship/project. Funding: up to $3,600.

Dance Study Grant
Funding given by Edith Avilés de Kostes (BMC '88) to fully or partially support a student or students in an intensive summer program of dance study in technique, performance or composition in a nationally or internationally recognized program. The grant may also be used for pursuing a unique research project in which the actual study and practice of technique, performance or composition is an integral part of the project.
