[The following letter was one of many sent by myself and many others, requesting the President to make good on his promises and enforce UN resolutions on Bosnia. The President did not act, however, and allowed the UN "safe area" of Srebrenica to be overrun and subjected to genocide. Finally, the fall of 1995, air-strikes were authorized and within 2-3 weeks, the Serb army had abandoned the siege of Sarajevo]

Dear Mr. President,

Last spring you promised that if the Bosnian Serb army continued its seige of Sarajevo, NATO would launch air strikes agains the Serb army heavy artillery.

For the past months, the Bosnian Serb army has been blowing up children, nurses, shoppers, elderly people. Yesterday a shell annihilated an entire family.

I beg you, Mr. President, PLEASE, keep the solemn commitment you made and direct our NATO commander to immediately begin plans to strike those artillery positions. Every time the Serb army has senses seriousness in NATO they have stopped. Show them you can be serious. Now. . .

Sincerely,

Michael Sells, Chair, Department of Religion Haverford College Haverford, PA 19041
