Two Translations of Naheen Atee

Koi umeed bar nahin aatee,
Koi soorat nazar nahin aatee !

[None of my wishes get fulfilled,
And none of the faces I want to see, appear !]

Maut ka ek din muaiyan hai,
Neend kyon raat bar nahin aatee !

[Death as its own day already planned,
Don't know why I can't sleep throughout the night !]

Aagay aatee thee haal-e-dil par hansi,
Ab kisi baat par nahi aatee !

[Earlier I could laugh at my own condition,
Now I am not able to laugh at anything !]

Hai kuch aisee hi baat ke chup hoon,
Warna kya baat karni nahin aatee !

[There is something that has kept me mum,
Otherwise, do you think I can't speak !]

Hun wahan jahan se hum ko bhi,
Kuch hamari khabar nahin aatee !

[I have reached that stage of my life,
From where, even I don't know my own welfare !]

Martay hain aarzoo mein marnay ki,
Maut aatee hai par nahin aatee !

[I die in the hope of dying,
It comes but it actually doesn't come !]

Kaabay kis muhn say jaaogay `Ghalib',
Sharam tum ko magar nahin aatee !

[How can you go to the mosque 'Ghalib',
You don't even feel ashamed !]

1. koee ummeed bar naheeN aatee
koee soorat nazar naheeN aatee

[None of my hopes/desires get completed/fulfilled
there is no solution/remedy that I can see]

2. maut ka ek din mu'ayyan hai [ mu'ayyan = definite ]
neeNd kyoN raat bhar naheeN aatee ?

[Death is definitely going to come one day
Why don't (I) get sleep the whole night?]

3. aage aatee thee haal-e-dil pe haNsee
ab kisee baat par naheeN aatee

[Before, I used to laugh at my state of affairs(of the heart)
Now, I do not feel like laughing at anything at all]

4. hai kuchch 'eisee hee baat jo chup hooN
warna kya baat kar naheeN aatee ?

[There is surely some reason that I am quiet
Otherwise, would'nt I have talked/would'nt I have been able to talk??]

5. ham wahaaN haiN jahaaN se hamko bhee
kuchch hamaaree KHabar naheeN aatee

[I am at such a place/location from where,
I also do not get any news about myself at all]

6. kaaba'a kis muNh se jaaoge 'GHalib' [kaaba'a - Islam's holiest shrine in Mecca]
sharm tumko magar naheeN aatee

[With what face will you go to the kaaba, "Ghalib"
You do not get/feel shameful at all]
