There will be a reception for Bosnian Students, Families and Supporters this Sunday at 5:30, immediately following the BEETHOVEN for BOSNIA concert (3;15 Marshall Auditorium) to celebrate the difference the Haverford Community has made this year, and to celebrate the end of Curt Cacioppo and Geoffrey Michaels' Beethoven for Bosnia Recitals.
1) It's Final! Two Bosnian students are coming to Haverford next year: Ksenija Topic and Vanja Filipovic. We will be sending out a campus wide letter with more details on this accomplishment by the Haverford Community.
Thanks to Delsie Phillips and all the people in Admissions and Financial Aid, and the entire Haverford community for helping make this happen.
2) WALTER LEE has joined Haverford's Community of Bosnia Foundation as our coordinator. He will be working with me in my office (Gest 201, ex. 1027) in organizing support for Bosnian Students and developing the COB Foundation. Walter comes to us from Children of the World, where he worked in support of Romanian Children, and from the University of Pennsylvania, where he worked in grant-writing and other areas to develop the East Asian Studies program. Walter is a spectacular person. He has already made major contributions to the program. COB attained a grant from the Threshold Foundation to enable us to find Walter. Special thanks to everyone in the grant-process and in our discussions with the Threshold Committee members last semester, particularly Marcie Middlebrooks, Mark Auslander, and Slavica Matacic.
3) Irvana Kapetanovic, who is living at Haverford and attending Villanova is on the Dean's list and doing very well. Deep gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the Irvana Kapetanovic fund and to Sid Waldman and Kay Reed for their generosity and care in opening their home to Irvana.
4) Our associates at Penn, with the Penn Coalition for Peace in Bosnia, have helped achieve a full scholarship for a Bosnian student. The student is now in Zagreb. As the people at Penn were speaking with her this week, shells could be heard falling around her. Her mother was injured in last week's shelling of civilians in Sarajevo that killed several children. The achievement of this scholarship took two years of work by several groups and about 50 concern students and supports and Penn, Haverford, and the Fellowship of Reconciliation.
5) Our scholarship for the Bosnian Student at St. Joseph's has been finalized. The student is waiting in Croatia to apply for a student visa. Due to the shelling of Zagreb civilian areas with cluster bombs, the American Embassy and Consulate are closed until further notice. We are determined to get these talented students out of the conflict and into school in any way we can.
6) Our scholarships at Friends Central and Germantown Friends are final. The two students, twins, are also in Croatia waiting to apply for their student visas. Special thanks to Deborah Daily, Helene Pollock, and Steve Cary for their support in obtaining these scholarships. The two children, who are twins, will be living with two local families.
7) A Bosnian student is coming to Swarthmore next year on a full scholarship. He is now in Canada with his mother. They are from Bijeljina which has been at the Center of "ethnic cleansing". We will be trying to help them locate missing family members and are working with a superb support group at Swarthmore.
8) The students now finishing their first year at Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Rosemont, Cabrini, West Chester, and Goldey Beacom are doing superbly--which will make our argument to colleges to waive standarized test score results for students coming from areas of "ethnic cleansing" where taking such tests is not feasible.
Hope to see you on Sunday!
Michael
