War, chaos, and tragedy has engulfed the Sudan ever since its
independence from the British Empire in 1956. The Islamic north's
persecution of Christians in South Sudan and South Sudan's armed
rebellions and retaliations have claimed the lives of hundreds of
thousands of people. Despite several peace initiatives over the past
eight years, no real progress has been made in eliminating slavery,
imposed Islamic education, or the government-made famine in South
Sudan. And so the North Sudan's policy of eradicating non-Islamic
influences from the south through suffering and destruction continues
to this day.
