Foum Tatahouine is the largest settlement in the far south of Tunisia, at the edge of the Sahara. It was the site of a French Foreign Legion prison and later an administrative center for tribes of southern Tunisia, many of whom were bedouin and only gradually have come to settle in town. Near Foum Tatahouine are Roman ruins, troglodite dwellings, ksars (from the Arabic for castle) which are now used as granaries, and the last three Berber villages in Tunisia: Chenini, Douiret, and Guermessa. Here is a photo of Ksar Hadada and the Berber village of Chenini, in its dramatic hilltop location. Both photos by Garry Brinton, with Michael Sells, taken in 1974.
