Provides an in-depth exploration of the development of symbolic thought in infancy and childhood. Examines the major theories and empirical research on topics including language development, gesture, pretend play, graphic symbol understanding, learning from video images, literacy, and symbol use by non-human primates. Laboratory component will involve an original research project that is designed, collected and analyzed by the class members. Prerequisite: Psychology 206 Enrollment limited to 20 students.
