The Renaissance, Art and Collecting
The Renaissance Kunstkammer, also called cabinet of wonder and curiosity, held art objects (paintings, ivories, coins, small sculptures, armor, antiquities, technical instruments) and natural objects (metals and minerals, stuffed animals, marvels of the sea, monsters recorded in word and image) and objects considered both art and nature (New World artifacts). In this seminar, we will examine the Kunstkammer in theory and practice and as a site of visual culture in which the aristocracy, the merchant class as well as artists and scholars participated (e.g., D rer, Holbein, the Cranach print publishing house and the Vischer foundry). Cross listed as GERM B321.
