NEW COURSE.The development and maintenance of vertebrate blood is tasked to rare quiescent multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, which must balance programs for self-renewal and differentiation. This balance is determined both intrinsically through a number of different signaling pathways, including the NF-Y transcription factor, and extrinsically by the microenvironmental niche in which they reside. We employ a combination of cellular and molecular techniques to investigate these two aspects of hematopoietic stem cell regulation. Laboratory work is supplemented with readings from the current literature.
