Jackie Battenfield is a painter
working with imagery evoking the abstract elements of nature,
such as wind, water, and fire. Born in 1950 in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, she graduated from Pennsylvania State University
with a degree in Art Education in 1971 and received her M.F.A.
in 1978 from the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse
University. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Award
(1991) and the Warren Tanner Award (1996).
Galleries throughout the United
States represent her work including: Addison-Ripley, Washington,
D.C.; Elins Eagle-Smith, San Francisco, California; Gwenda
Jay Addington Gallery, Chicago, Illinois and Patrick Olsen
Gallery in Plymouth, Michigan. In 2000, she was invited by
Golden Artist Colors to lecture about her work for the Turner
Colors Series to art schools and universities in throughout
Japan. Her work is in over 1,000 collections worldwide including:
The New York Public Library, The Zimmerli Art Museum, Montclair
Art Museum, New Jersey; Palmer Museum, Pennsylvania, Museum
of Art at the University of Arizona, Tucson, United States
Department of State, Washington, D.C.; and the Sasaki Collection,
Japan.
In addition to her studio work,
Jackie is an active member of the arts community. In 1981
she helped to found the Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn, New York.
At the Rotunda Gallery she worked as its Director until 1989,
curating thirty-six exhibitions and overseeing its' development
from a tiny, fledgling space to a stable, dynamic arts organization.
She is currently President of the Board of Directors of the
Lower East Side Printshop, and on advisory boards for the
School of Arts and Architecture at Penn State University and
the Rotunda Gallery. Teaching has included studio and art
history classes at Rhode Island School of Design, Syracuse
University, LaGuardia Community College (CUNY) and Empire
State College (SUNY).
Since 1991, Jackie has conducted
a postgraduate seminar, the Artist in the Marketplace Program
(AIM) for the Bronx Museum of the Arts. During weekly seminars,
Jackie assists emerging artists in acquiring crucial skills
in career development drawing upon her own experiences as
a curator, arts administrator, and exhibiting artist, along
with insights from other arts professionals. The goal of the
AIM program is to provide the artists with a foundation for
life long achievement. The past year she has assisted the
Creative Capital Foundation on the development and delivery
of workshops for mid career artists and with the New York
Foundation for the Arts on the creation of Full-Time Artist,
an M.F.A. level class curriculum in professional practices.
She is currently teaching this curriculum in the Columbia
University graduate program.
Jackie Battenfield has lived and
worked in New York City, since 1978. She is married to artist,
David Headley. They have two sons, Drew and Ian.
