1900-1910 April 1, 1905 -- Haverford defeats host Harvard 1-0 in the first intercollegiate "socker" (also called "Association Football") game anywhere under modern rules. Fords repeat the 1-0 victory on April 15 at Haverford. C. Christopher Morris '04, better-known for his cricket heroics, scores the winning goal in both games. Honorable Mention: Cricket tours England in 1900, 1904 and wins over Harvard in 1906, 1907...Track's 1904 victory over Rutgers and 1907 Penn Relays mile win... Football's undefeated 1906 season... 1911-1920 April 10, 1916 -- Haverford blanks mighty Penn, 2-0, in Fords' first varsity baseball game ever behind late-inning "Spalding Guide" baseball and one-hitter from pitching ace George Haines Buzby '18, whose name still graces the HC baseball MVP trophy. 'Fords score in the 8th; Penn gets its only hit in 9th. Honorable Mention: Tennis and track record first wins over Swarthmore (1910 and 1913)....Football revives series with Swarthmore in 1914 (a 3-3 tie) and wins 10-7 in 1916....soccer wins 1915 national college championship as Frank Cary '16 leads Haverford to wins over Princeton, Columbia, Harvard, and Yale. |

The 1920s May 25, 1929 -- After four straight runner-up finishes, Haverford's track team breaks through to win the MASCAA title over 14 other colleges, scoring in 10 of 14 events. J. Howard Morris '30 wins shot-put and discus with new conference records. Herb Ensworth '29 takes gold, silver in sprints for Pop Haddleton's thinclads. Honorable Mention: Cricket completes undefeated regular season and takes England tour in 1925... fine football teams under Harvey Harman 1926-29... soccer finishes undefeated 8-0-2 in 1926.... Henderson Supplee '30 hurls 1-hit, 2-1 baseball win over Swarthmore in May, 1927; Supplee, Ken Kingham '29 combine to hold diamond foes to 3 runs in 36 innings in 1929 season. |

A Tie.... May 14-15, 1937: "Pop" does it again. Haddletonmen win MASCAA track championship over runners-up Rutgers and Swarthmore. John Lewis '39 wins broad jump (20' 6 1/2") while Sturgis Poorman '37 ties for the high jump medal (6' 1 1/4"). The team goes 6-0 in dual meets, with College records broken by Joe Wingerd '39 (a 9.9 100 yard-dash) and Sam Evans '38 (15.5 high hurdles). Nov. 23, 1938: Soccer beats Cornell, 2-1, on a muddy Class of '88 Field to clinch dual Middle Atlantic titles. Ned Allinson '41 and Frankie Mears '39 get the goals. Jonathan Evans '39 captains Coach Jim Gentle's Fords, who defeat Princeton and Swarthmore during the season and bow only to Penn. Honorable Mention: Soccer undefeated in 1931, track from 1935-38... Harry Fields '32 finishes fourth in college wrestling championships in 1932, receives bid to Olympic trials...Ham Welbourn '37 hurls 9-2 baseball win over Swarthmore in 1936... |

A three-way tie betweeen two great Haverford-Swarthmore football games and an undefeated soccer squad. On November 20, 1942, Haverford beats Swat 14-13 to conclude the only undefeated, untied varsity gridiron season in College history. Fords outrush the Garnet, 309-145. On November 10, 1945, the soccer team duplicates the feat by beating Princeton, 2-1, in one of most thrilling finishes ever. Nate Cooper scores the winning goal with 1.5 seconds to go after previous shot rebounds off the goalpost. On November 20, 1948, Ted Test '50 scores 2 TDs, 4 extra points in 28-28 tie before 7,000 fans; many remember the game as the most exciting, skillful athletic contest ever on the HC campus. Honorable Mention: A.W. (Pop) Haddleton's 1940 cross-country squad finishes undefeated... Wrestling goes unbeaten in 1941... Track takes MASCAA championship in 1942...George Montgomery '46 breaks state basketball scoring record (26.8 per game in 1944-45)...May 28, 1949, Jim Grosholz '49 wins IC4A half-mile, goes on to finish 5th in nation and set HC records in all running events from 440 up....Jim Schnaars '50 leads Coach Norm Bramall's superb 10-1, 12-1 tennis teams of 1947, 1948.... G. Diehl Mateer '50 wins national collegiate squash title. |
