The Psychology Department is housed on the 4th and 5th floors of Sharpless Hall, a building shared with the Biology Department. A renovation of the psychology lab spaces took place during the summer of 2000, and our facilities are now part of Haverford's new Integrated Natural Science Center (INSC).

The Psychology Department research facilities and resources include:

1. A suite of research rooms, located on the 4th floor of Sharpless Hall, is reserved for student research purposes. This facility houses eight Windows workstations which are loaded with current software for statistics (SPSS v11.0) and experimental stimulus presentation and millisecond data acquisition (E-Prime). A brand new Macintosh-based digital video editing studio, a high resolution scanner, and a laser printer are also available for student research. These rooms also include one-way mirrors that can be used for the collection of observational data, as well as sufficient space for conducting experiments in group dynamics.
2. A cognition laboratory including a computer-controlled MIDI keyboard and music synthesizer system capable of generating a wide variety of stimuli for studies in perception and memory. Other equipment includes audio sound systems and VCRs, and a computer-interfaced response system for data collection. The department has equipment for recording and editing of audio and videotapes.
3. A biological psychology laboratory, used for faculty and student research, in addition to teaching laboratory courses, contains a range of equipment and resources. This lab includes an animal colony, equipment for computer-controlled physiological recording (e.g. EKG, EEG, GSR) from humans, stereotaxic manipulation, and several types of behavioral assessment apparatus.
4. A neuropsychology lab containing equipment for computerized tachistoscopic experiments on brain laterality in humans. The suite of rooms includes one large room as well as two individual participant testing rooms, as well as computing facilities used in the creation of stimulus materials, experiment presentation and data collection, and data analysis. Specialized equipment such as a chinrest, response-time buttonboxes, and standardized personality and emotion questionnaire instruments are housed in this lab.
5. A social psychology and relationship sciences lab including multiple workstations for computerized data collection (e.g., reaction time data, internet-based measurement), as well as facilities designed for dyadic observations. In addition, the lab houses a number of personal digital assistants (i.e., “Palm Pilots”) for use in daily-diary studies.

Many laboratory courses are taught in state-of-the-art computer classroom in the INSC equipped with statistics and experimental design software on 20 student workstations. Additional laboratory computers in Sharpless Hall are devoted to student and faculty research projects. Lecture courses are typically taught in two classrooms adjacent to the psychology faculty offices on the 4th floor of Sharpless, or in the nearby Sharpless Auditorium.

The Psychology lounge, also on the 4th floor of Sharpless Hall, provides a communal, informal interaction space for students and faculty. The lounge contains a range of psychology books and journals (not maintained by the library), information regarding graduate schools, file cabinets containing readings for senior projects, and a kitchenette.
