From Gather through Excel to SPSS: slideshow
- 1 Access the
Haverford Gather server with the usernname of the person specified as
"Form Owner" in the web survey (in this case, "ddavis").
- 2 Select the form data (in this case, "p214.03.q1")
from the pulldown menu and choose "(tab)open excel" as output format.
- 3 When the data are loaded in spreadsheet form
into the browser, save in your onw directory as a file of type "Microsoft
Excel Workbook" with a name like "myname.p214.03.q1"
- 4, 5, 6,
7 Load the newly-created .xls file
into Excel, delete empty/uneccesary columns and rows, and correct cells with
incorrect data (e.g., fixing entries that show up as dates by typing in a
number like "4.5" when the subject had entered "4-5" and
changing the cell's format from "date" to "general").
- 8, 9, 10,
11, 12 Add columns for
created valiables and perform Excel computation as necessary. (Note: Excel
drops the empty cells in averaging, so we'll stick with summing
for now.)
- 13 Save the edited Excel file twice, once with
and once without the open-ended text vaiables, which we'll use later in describing
our findings.)
- 14, 15 Load SPSS and select
the edited Excel file (without the open-ended responses) from the Data menu.
- 16 After further editing and variable cleanup, save
as SPSS file.
You should now be ready to email me the saved SPSS file.
Please let me (ddavis@haverford.edu)
know of any problems you encounter with this process, and make suggestions for
