'"Genital" "Utopia""

In light of half a century's more social evolution, how are we to understand Erikson's (1950) formula:

Note that Erikson speaks (1950/1963, p. 92) of three "difficult reconciliations":

  1. of genital orgasm and extragenital sexual needs
  2. of love and sexuality
  3. of sexual, procreative, and work-productive patterns

His discussion on the following page of, for example, use of sexual contact with males to "snare" their power, may make sense in some cases -- but Psychology no longer assumes this tendency to be more characteristic of same- than of opposite-sex intercourse, but rather of immature/neurotic sexual activity by or toward either sex.
