One year visiting Assistant Professor in Geographic Information Systems
Swarthmore College invites applications for a one year visiting assisstant professor position in Geographic Information Systems for the 2014-2015 academic year.
Swarthmore College is seeking a person to teach the theory and practical applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to the joint Environmental Studies Program of the Tri-Colleges (Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore). This one-year visiting assistant professor position begins in fall 2014. A Ph.D. involving research related to environmental studies (specific discipline open) and a strong background in GIS are expected. The teaching load for the full-time position is four courses per year, two at Swarthmore and two at neighboring Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges. In addition, this person will organize a GIS workshop for faculty, as well has collaborate
with faculty and students on projects involving GIS. Alternatively, the teaching of the four courses and workshop could be shared among part-time appointments.
The position of visiting assistant professor is accorded similar status to that of tenure-track junior faculty at Swarthmore, with travel and research funding, a competitive starting salary, and excellent benefits. Candidates should submit a statement describing their teaching experience and possible teaching plans if they were to come to Swarthmore, and a separate statement describing their research (in terms non-experts can understand), including a description of their background in GIS.
