Haverford College invites applications for a skilled orchestral conductor and chamber music coach to fill a one-term sabbatical replacement position (full time) for the spring term of 2014. Reporting to the Department Chair, successful candidates will: direct weekly 2.5 hours of rehearsal of Haverford-Bryn Mawr student orchestra consisting of about 75 undergraduates (majors and non-majors); organize and conduct one spring orchestra concert and three chamber music recitals held in the spring; coach weekly rehearsals of approximately 6-8 student chamber music groups, culminating in several chamber music recitals throughout the term; work with visiting solo and chamber music artists to ensure rich interchange with undergraduate instrumentalists; organize annual student concerto competition; work with Haverford’s Performance Coordinator and Administrative Assistant on publicity, scheduling, hiring of area professionals to supplement orchestra, and other details of the program; and work with Music Department Chair and colleagues to link instrumental program with theory, composition, and history courses, and with choral program. Advanced degree in conducting, or equivalent professional experience; performance background in stringed instruments preferred; familiarity with needs of students in liberal arts context and proven administrative skills extremely important.
