Welcome to Physics 211: Laboratory in Electronics and Waves, taught by Suzanne Amador Kane, Jerry Gollub and Scott Shelley. The lab manual is the only required text for the lab. All Lab Writeups are posted on Blackboard. Be sure to download and read the first lab and completed the pre-lab assignment due at the first meeting (Sept. 3) If you have not preregistered, please email one of us to get added to Blackboard so you have access and so we can enable cardkey access to the lab.
Who should take Physics 211 lab? Everyone! In particular, this is the first of three upper-level labs required for the physics major and minor (Physics 211, 212 and either 316 or 326.) Typically you take this lab concurrently with Physics 213, our lecture-based course on Waves and Optics, but you can also take it later if that's a better match to your schedule. Because its subject material is so useful for astronomy, we urge our astronomy majors and minors to consider taking this lab as well, though it's not required.
In our lab course, you will start with some very fun and very practical electrical circuits labs that will develop your hands-on skills as experimentalists while also teaching you quite a bit of modern electronics. (Take Physics 316 later to take this to the next step and build your very own computer!) After that, you'll do some cool and exciting labs with optics, chaos, medical ultrasound imaging and resonance--a core organizing concept from the accompanying lecture course, Physics 213. We will work with the Physics 213 lecturer to coordinate topics as much as we can, and to relate our lab material to that course.

Two-week labs in the second half of the semester will include: chaos; resonance & normal modes; dispersion relations for water waves; ultrasound imaging; geometrical optics & optical instruments (the eye, microscope & telescope); and physical optics.
