Advanced Lab Teaching Resources

This page provides a map to our online teaching resources for advanced laboratories at Haverford College Physics.

We have three labs that effectively fall in this category.  Most unusally, our sophomore-level labs cover much of the material usually taught in Jr. lab.  Our majors then take a semester of upper-level junior or senior level advanded lab.  The sophomore labs have standard writeups (see below), while our advanced electronics and computer instrumentation lab is taught out of prerelease copies of the new version of Art of Electronics Lab Manual (courtesy of Tom Hayes, Harvard University), and our advanced lab course per se is project based and students do not have writeups to work off of.  Feel free to contact us with any questions.

Lab Manual for Nanoscale Science and Technology (University of Wisconsin's MRSEC)--has excellent online materials with many good ideas.

Physics 211:  Laboratory in Electronics, Waves & Optics

This course meets weekly for 3 hours per week.  Students writeup short reports for the labs through the first half of the semester, then do either oral reports (1/2 hr) or longer written reports the second half.

Physics 316:  Advanced Electronics and Computer Instrumentation

This covers analog and digital electronics through a final project involving constructing a microcontroller basec computer, programmingn it, and interfacing it to a project of the students choosing.

Physics 326:  Advanced Physics Lab

This is our project lab.  Here are is our curriculum on error analysis and data analysis, using Practical Physics (Gordon Squires), an excellent, brief, inexpensive and practical resource.
