Current Research

My current research is primarily in the history and philosophy of mathematics. I am especially interested in reasoning in the languages of mathematics—in diagrams in ancient Euclidean geometry, in the symbolic language of arithmetic and algebra, and in Frege’s strange two-dimensional notation Begriffsschrift—and in the idea that reasoning in all these cases is constructive, diagrammatic (in a suitably broad sense), and ampliative.

Some of my recent thoughts on reasoning in Frege’s language can be found in this power point presentation designed by my student Hannah Kovacs ’09.
