Many are unaware of the war going on in Central East Africa for decades. Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lords Resistance Movement in Northern Uganda, has recruited child soldiers, to fight against and terrorize the surrounding countries. It is through abduction that these children are forced to become soldiers under Kony’s brutal and devastating rule. In the past 2 decades, Joseph Kony and his soldiers have destroyed lands, schools, and have caused many families to be displaced out of their homes. The many that have been displaced are forced into overcrowded shelters where many face serious diseases and starvation. In 2003, three filmmakers went into Northern Uganda and witnessed the horrible realities of that Central East African country, and began documenting the things they witnessed. They titled the film, The Invisible Children Documentary. With this movie they were able to create a national movement which became a campaign, “The Invisible Children Campaign”, whereby, bringing awareness of the conflict in Northern Uganda and child trafficking they could hope to encourage the reformation of a nation and its surrounding countries, by the rebuilding of schools and home. Over the past 7 years the campaign has grown immensely and reform is taking place in Northern Uganda.
After watching the Invisible Children Documentary, I was inspired to create a bi-collge organization at Haverford and Bryn Mawr that would work to raise awareness and funds for the people of Northern Uganda who are in need of change. Sustainability is the key. Can our two campuses overtime have a large impact on this very important cause and raise awareness in surrounding Pennsylvania area schools? I believe we can. In order to sustain this club we need to inspire our student/faculty with the story and introduce them to the faces of these “Invisible Children”.
Our goal as a club in Haverford and Bryn Mawr is threefold:
Teach the message of the “Invisible Children”, and inspire the community to be a part of the campaign.
Gather the inspired and share with them year after year the goal of the campaign, whereby new actionable plans can emerge.
Create winning possibilities for “The Invisible Children” campaign through fundraising, etc.
