B.E.S.T. Mentoring Program
The B.E.S.T. Mentoring Program sends Haverford students to Belmont Charter School in West Philadelphia to mentor students between 1st and 8th grades. Haverford students make 2 hour trips to the school once a week throughout the entire school year. The program offers individual and group mentoring pairings. B.E.S.T. provides these students with responsible role models who assist their mentee(s) beyond the realm of academics and into their often complicated social lives. The experience is ultimately as rewarding for the mentor as it is for the mentee(s) as the weekly visits forge an enduring relationship between the two.
The program is currently seeking to expand its presence both on Haverford's campus and beyond. It ultimately hopes to increase the number of mentors that have participated in the program in recent years (which has been anywhere from 25-35) and also to complete some, if not all, of the following tasks: to create a mentoring newsletter that can be sent out to mentors and the college campuses that they represent, to establish a certificate program for each mentor to receive upon their completion of a mentor-specific training session and also to create a broader mentoring network with other college campuses that are involved in the program.
