Tamara Lave '90 Places Third Among Americans In IAAF World Marathon

Tamara Lave, Haverford College's first female cross country and track All-American, and only the second female Division III runner to compete in an Olympics or IAAF world championship, placed 55th overall and third among the five U.S. entries in the Marathon at the IAAF World Championship at Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Sunday, Aug. 31.

A Pittsburgh native from Winchester-Thurston School who now lives and trains in San Diego, Lave completed the 26.2-mile race in 2:46.22, a few minutes off her 2:37:32 time at the California International Marathon in Sacramento last December, when she was first among U.S. women. Kenya's Catherine Ndereba (2:23.55) won today's race, more than 10 minutes ahead of Americans Jill Gaitenby (2:34.54) and Linda Somers Smith (2:37.14), who placed 33rd and 37th, respectively. Kelly Keane (2:55.26) was 59th overall and Sylvia Mosqueda did not finish the race for the Team USA.

At Haverford, Lave achieved Division III All-America status in the 10,000 meters in May 1990 for current head coach Fran Rizzo, after she had earned Middle Atlantic Conference individual titles and Top 25 NCAA cross country finishes in 1988 and 1989. She still holds the HC record in the indoor 3,000 meters (10:12.4), which she set on Feb. 25, 1990. Lave is the first Ford (male or female) to compete in a senior world event since the late Seamus McElligott '91 ran in the World Cross Country Championships in 1996. Nine-time NCAA Division III champion Karl Paranya '97 competed in Junior World Championships, but never at the senior level.

In the opener of the 2003 Haverford Kickoff Tournament, defending champion and host Haverford defeated Arcadia 3-2.

Men's Cross-Country
Fords captain Scott Sargrad '04 (19:56.4) won individual honors, just ahead of alumnus and 2001 NCAA Division III cross-country champion J.B. Haglund (19:57) as a small group of veteran runners from 10-time defending Centennial Conference champion Haverford opened their competitive season at Ursinus' Hunsberger Woods.

Frosh Jane Weber (11:54) was a winner in her first collegiate race, and sophomore Anastasia Mukhina (12:15), frosh Maxine Markfield (12:18), soph Claire Fawcett (12:25) and junior Kate Reese (12:25) swept third through sixth places, respectively, as preseason Centennial Conference favorite Fords got quality finishes from young runners in their unscored, season-opening home meet.

Volleyball
The Haverford volleyball team played host to eight others in the 18th Annual Haverford Invitational. Playing in a Pool with Rowan and St. Mary's, the Fords (2-0) defeated the Seahawks of St. Mary's 3-2, with game scores of 30-19, 22-30, 30-21, 25-30, and 15-13.
In the second match, Haverford squared off against Rowan, defeating the Profs 3-1 (30-26, 23-30, 30-28, 30-22).
