Haverford will host “Voith & Mactavish Architects:
A Retrospective (1988-2003),” a multimedia exhibit celebrating
the 15th anniversary of the Philadelphia architecture firm headed
by Daniela Holt Voith and Cameron J. Mactavish, in the Cantor Fitzgerald
Gallery Jan. 23-Feb. 22, 2004.
Daniela Holt Voith, a 1976 alumna of Bryn Mawr College, was part
of the first class to graduate from Bryn Mawr’s Growth and
Structure of Cities program, in which students study the relationship
of urban spatial organization to politics, economics, culture, and
societies. Voith currently teaches a course in architectural design
as part of this program at Bryn Mawr.
The exhibit displays various examples from Voith & Mactavish’s
extensive portfolio and includes hand-rendered conceptual sketches,
two-and-three-dimensional renderings, models, large and small scale
photographs, and original watercolor renderings by Cameron Mactavish.
The retrospective features many of the firm’s local projects,
such as the renovation and expansion of Moore College of Art &
Design, the rehabilitation and addition to the Frank Furness-designed
Paul Peck Alumni Center at Drexel University, and the renovation
of Thomas Great Hall at Bryn Mawr College.
An opening reception for the exhibit will be held Friday, Jan. 30,
from 5-7 p.m. at the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery, where visitors can
obtain a catalog published collaboratively by Haverford and Bryn
Mawr that includes articles by Growth and Structure of Cities program
founder Barbara Miller Lane (co-authored with art historian David
Cast) and architect and historian Steven Harby.
Two additional events will be held in conjunction
with the retrospective. Daniela Holt Voith will give a talk titled
“On Being Modern,” sponsored by Bryn Mawr College’s
Center for Visual Culture, Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 12:30-1:45 p.m.
at Bryn Mawr’s Thomas Room 224. Cameron Mactavish will provide
a watercolor demonstration Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 4:15-5:30 p.m.
at the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery.
The Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday
and noon-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, call
(610) 896-1287.
