What is your current job?

I am an analyst in the corporate strategic insights and research department at Viacom Media Networks. My role consists of researching and analyzing ratings and audience measurement data on Viacom channels and their competitors. I use this data to provide insights and information to Viacom executive management on the performances of their cable properties and on the overall television landscape. In addition to standard reporting, much of my position consists of responding to inquiries from Viacom management by providing in-depth analyses on specific events or programs.

Why did you choose this profession?

I chose to work in media/television because it is one of the most rapidly evolving and growing industries, domestically and globally. I love that it is built on ever evolving technology, a competitive landscape, and that it allows me to be a part of something that influences nearly everyone's life. The type of work I do is a composite of economics/statistics and arts/media. It affords me the opportunity to utilize the analytical and statistical skills, as well as the writing skills, that I gained in school.

What more do you wish to accomplish in your professional career?

I would like to move up within the media/television industry to become a major contributor to how ideas and entertainment are communicated and consumed.

Tell us about a decision or change you made that turned out to be a positive career move.

My first job out of Haverford was as a cable television buyer with a major advertising agency. It was a wonderful introduction to the industry, but I wanted something that would be more analytical and that would give me the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the media landscape. The move to corporate research at Viacom has given me a broader perspective of the industry and keeps me on the cutting edge of what is happening in in the television world. I have been performing management driven internal and competitive analysis and have been a part of cross company junior executive committees and projects. It has been a great move.

How has Haverford influenced your professional career?

Haverford gave me the foundation upon which to build my career. It gave me the analytical skills, breadth of social and historical knowledge, and the ability to question and research. I feel confident as a leader and know how to be part of a team. Haverford has also given me a network of friends and colleague that I can rely on for advice and perspective.
