An important message from Ann Loar Brooks and Steve G. Brooks P'12, P'14

Dear Friends,

We are two-thirds of the way through our six years as Haverford parents—that’s right, six. Our son Giff graduated with the Class of 2012 in May, and Catherine is a member of the Class of 2014. (Our other daughter Audrey graduated from Vassar in 2011.) We are delighted to stay connected to the College a little longer than most because Haverford has been such a positive influence on both of our Fords.

Giff majored in economics with a math concentration and is now an analyst in the Washington, DC office of Cornerstone Research, an economic litigation consulting firm. His junior year at the London School of Economics and two summers working with Econsult in Philadelphia (one of them through Haverford’s Whitehead intern program) were important experiences that helped him transition his academic interests into a career. Catherine, a psychology major with an economics minor, enjoys serving as an intern with Eighth Dimension (8D), Haverford's office of community service, and she worked as a counselor at Serendipity, 8D's summer camp on the Haverford campus. She will spend the second semester of her junior year at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen.

Throughout the years our children have spent at Haverford, we’ve been amazed at the multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach the College takes to its academic program. The abundant opportunities to supplement traditional classroom learning with hands-on work in other academic and professional settings is a remarkable characteristic of Haverford’s educational program. There are others: faculty who engage students in their research, self-governance that fosters leadership and responsibility, and financial aid that diversifies the student body so all can benefit from myriad perspectives and backgrounds.

These resources and opportunities are made possible in part by the Parents’ Fund—a component of the College’s Annual Fund, which accounts for more than seven percent of Haverford’s budget. Parent and alumni contributions are essential to maintaining and enhancing the Haverford experience. In the past, the Parents’ Fund has been unrestricted, supporting the College’s greatest need. This year, you may direct your gift to the area that is most meaningful to you and your student: academic enrichment, financial aid, campus and facilities, student life or athletics. You may also continue to make a gift to greatest need, which is unrestricted.

No matter which you choose, your gift to the Parents’ Fund is truly a gift to your student, as it will be put to immediate use on campus. Please join us in supporting the College by making a gift to Haverford today.
