Dean of Professional and Career Advising
The Dean of Professional and Career Advising will work with faculty, alumni and other colleagues to explore and strengthen curricular and co-curricular relationships across the student experience, and will develop new approaches to ensuring that Haverford graduates are articulate and effective citizens of a diverse and ever-changing world. S/he will have a strong commitment to the liberal arts, and a dynamic vision for conveying the relevance of a liberal arts education to students, faculty, parents and employers. S/he will be an active force in stimulating campus-wide conversation around issues of education and the workforce, and in integrating the contributions and expertise of Haverford graduates into the professional planning activities of undergraduates. Reporting to the Dean of the College, s/he will also participate in the general advising function of the Dean’s Office, providing support to sophomores, juniors and seniors. S/he will serve as a member of various campus committees and participate in the Dean-on-Call rotation.
The six Deans, who also hold the title Associate Dean of the College, have distinctive portfolios but share general duties that include the interpretation of college academic and social regulations, crisis intervention, problem-solving, policy development and implementation, and referral of students to appropriate College resources. This position will complement the existing areas of responsibility held by the Dean’s Office staff: Academic Affairs, Student Life, Multicultural Affairs, International Academic Programs and First-Year Programs. A Master’s degree is required; a PhD or other terminal degree is highly desirable. Candidates from a variety of backgrounds will be considered, but five to seven years of experience in higher education, working directly with students and faculty, are anticipated. We are looking for a dynamic and engaging leader with the ability to facilitate dialogue and forge alliances across constituencies, and who has a demonstrated commitment to student development as well as an intellectual interest in the intersection of higher education with its larger social and cultural context.
Haverford is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer with a longstanding commitment to diversity rooted in values of inclusion, social justice, peacemaking and conflict resolution. Women and members of underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
